Banned Books Week

Hey Gators!

Do you think someone else should tell you what you should or shouldn't read? That's what Banned Books Week is all about. Sometimes people find a book in a library that they don't like, and decide that no one should read it. They contact the library and "challenge" the book. If they are successful in getting the book removed, the book has been "banned". The American Library Association feels you have the right to read what you want. Check out some of the challenged or banned books, and some of the reasons behind the challenges in the Banned Books displays in your MGMS Gator Library. Then, take a quiz to see how well you know the issues around the topic of Freedom to Read: http://www.kidspeakonline.org/iq.html

What do YOU think about banning books? How well did you do on the quiz? Tell us what you think by commenting to this post.

Kidsmomo!

Hey Gators!

I just found a great link on Twitter to an AWESOME kid's book blog: Kidsmomo! The home page has a video (posted 9/28) you can watch and try to guess what book it describes. If you can guess the title, you can ask your parents' permission to enter it on the site OR you can give your guess to the Library Goddess. If you're right, you'll win some sort of fabulous prize! (or not so fabulous--I guess you'll be the judge on that!) Anyway, here are some hints: MGMS has two copies of this book, it's the winner of the Coretta Scott King Award, and was a Newbery Honor winner. It was copyrighted in 2007.

BTW...Check out the site and its other videos and book lists and tell me what you think by commenting to this post!

What is YOUR Digital Footprint, Gators?

Lost in a Book

Hey Gators!

Have you ever read a book that you couldn't put down? This summer I read one that ended up causing me to miss an appointment! I totally lost track of time while I was lost in the book. That book was Graceling by Kristin Cashore, a book new to your Gator Library this year. Check out a book trailer for Graceling at this link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/mpd/permalink/m34WM2E3L2INP4
You can find Graceling in with the other new books or on the shelves: FIC CAS.
I know I'm not the only one to get lost in a book....share your experience and the book you got lost in by commenting to this post!
